Staff Wellness - 5 Tips for a Year of Good Health

By Shannon Seddon, HCS clinician

At Heritage Christian Services, we care about the health and well-being of our employees. We’re offering five simple tips to help everyone relax and stay healthy throughout the year, at work and at home, too.

Take a Break. Allow yourself to take a short break. Try laying on the floor with your legs resting up against a wall so your body makes an “L” shape.  You can do this on a yoga mat and with as many supports needed, which will help with improved circulation, stretched hamstrings, loosened shoulder and back tension and help ease stress.

Find joy. Try finding at least one thing each day that is your little gift of joy to carry with you and get you through the day. When you find that you are feeling overwhelmed, return your thoughts to this gift. For example, you might see a beautiful sunrise or sunset on your way into work, or your child said something really funny or sweet or you shared a special moment with someone you support.

Practice Grace. When mistakes are made our self-talk is rarely positive, and we are our toughest critics. Allow yourself some grace and treat yourself gently and lovingly.

Talk with friends. A simple call, text or email to your loved ones can help ease stress. Take a minute to laugh, cry and share the latest news. A couple minutes of connection can go a long way.

Get Moving. A recent NPR story stated that any movement is good movement and counts as exercise. Even if you don’t have time to exercise for 30 minutes at a time, you can find ways to build movement into your day by parking farther away from an entrance, taking the stairs and more. There are many benefits of exercise such as increased energy, elevated mood, sleeping better and feeling better physically.

We hope these tips are helpful for a great year!
